Warsaw might not always be the first European city people think of visiting, but it absolutely should be. Poland’s capital is a fascinating mix of history and modern energy – from the colourful streets of the Old Town and royal palaces to trendy cafés, rooftop bars and a vibrant food scene. It’s a city that feels both historic and fresh at the same time, and it’s easy to see why more and more travellers are adding it to their Europe itineraries. Of course, I might be a little biased here – I’m Polish after all – but Warsaw really is a fantastic place to visit.

But once you start planning your trip, one question quickly comes up: where to stay in Warsaw? The city is quite spread out and each neighbourhood has a different vibe, so choosing the right area can make a big difference for your visit, especially if it’s your first time in the Polish capital.

To make things easier, I’ve put together this ultimate guide on where to stay in Warsaw, including the best areas for visitors and some great hotel options for every budget. I’ve also personally stayed in a few of the hotels on this list, so you’ll find some first-hand recommendations as well.

Best Areas to Stay in Warsaw

Technically, Warsaw is divided into 18 official districts, but those aren’t always the most helpful way to think about where to stay as a visitor. Instead, it’s easier to focus on a few well-known areas that are convenient, interesting and popular with tourists. To make things clearer, I’ve circled them on the map below.

The hotels I’ll recommend later in this guide are all located in one of these areas.

Old Town (Stare Miasto)

If it’s your first time in Warsaw, the Old Town is a fantastic place to stay. This is the most historic part of the city, full of colourful buildings, charming squares, cobblestone streets and some of Warsaw’s most famous landmarks. Even though the Old Town was almost completely destroyed during World War II, it was meticulously rebuilt and today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pros:

• close to major sights like the Royal Castle and Castle Square;
• beautiful historic atmosphere;
• very walkable and full of restaurants and cafés.

Cons:

• can get quite busy during peak tourist season;
• fewer hotel options than other areas;
• some hotels are in historic buildings, so rooms can be smaller.

Powiśle

Powiśle is one of my personal favourite areas to stay in Warsaw and it’s actually where I usually stay when I visit the city. Located just below the Old Town and along the Vistula River, it’s a lively neighbourhood with a great mix of parks, cafés, bars, and restaurants. Even though it’s extremely close to the Old Town, it feels a bit more relaxed than the city centre. And the riverfront area is especially nice in the summer.

Pros:

• close to the river and green spaces;
• walkable to the Old Town and city centre;
• great atmosphere with lots of cafés and restaurants.

Cons:

• some accommodation options are apartments rather than hotels;
• fewer large hotels compared to the city centre.

City Centre (Śródmieście – around the Palace of Culture)

The city centre around the Palace of Culture and Science is the modern heart of Warsaw. This area is full of hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, and excellent public transport connections. If convenience is your priority, this is one of the easiest places to stay. You’ll be close to the main train station, metro lines and within walking distance of many attractions.

Pros:

• very central location;
• great public transport connections;
• plenty of hotel options in all price ranges.

Cons:

• can feel a bit busy and business-oriented;
• less charming and historic than the Old Town.

City Centre (Śródmieście – around Plac Zbawiciela)

Plac Zbawiciela and the surrounding streets are one of Warsaw’s trendiest neighbourhoods, known for its lively café culture, bars and restaurants. This area has a younger, more local vibe compared to the Old Town and the main tourist areas. It’s a great choice if you want to experience a more modern side of Warsaw while still being fairly central. I actually stayed there once too and can confirm that all of that is true. Haha

Pros:

• popular with locals;
• great atmosphere in the evenings, especially in the summer;
• trendy cafés, restaurants, and nightlife.

Cons:

• slightly further from the main tourist attractions;
• fewer traditional hotels (more apartments and boutique stays).

Praga Południe

Located on the east side of the Vistula River, Praga Południe offers a completely different side of Warsaw. This district is known for its more authentic atmosphere and growing creative scene. It’s less touristy than the areas on the west side of the river, but that’s exactly what some travellers enjoy about it. It’s also home to some cool parks and speciality coffee shops and accommodation prices can be more affordable.

Pros:

• more local and authentic feel;
• interesting mix of culture, art, and nightlife;
• often better prices for accommodation.

Cons:

• not as tourist-oriented as other areas (although it can be a pro);
• further from the Old Town and main sights.

While Warsaw is often considered one of the more affordable capitals in Europe, hotel prices have gone up quite a bit in recent years, especially during the summer and on weekends. Finding a hotel for under $100 per night in a central location is still possible, but the options are more limited than they used to be.

The good news is that there are still some great value hotels in Warsaw that offer comfortable rooms and excellent locations without breaking the bank. Here are a few budget-friendly places worth considering.

Because of that, it’s especially popular with younger travellers and solo visitors who want to meet other people while exploring the city.

Hotel MDM City Centre is located right on Plac Konstytucji, one of the most recognizable squares in Warsaw. The building itself is historic, it opened in 1952 and was the first hotel built in the city after World War II, making it an interesting example of post-war Warsaw architecture. Today it’s a comfortable budget friendly/mid-range hotel with a very central location, surrounded by cafés, restaurants and excellent public transport connections.

Mid-range hotels

Mid-range hotels are probably the most realistic option for many visitors to Warsaw. They usually offer the best balance between price, comfort, and location.

Motel One Warsaw Chopin

Motel One is a well-known European hotel chain known for stylish design and good value for money. The Warsaw location has an excellent central position near the Chopin Museum, within walking distance of the Royal Route, the Old Town and the Powiśle district.

I’ve personally stayed here a few times and always enjoyed it – the rooms are modern and comfortable, and the location makes it very easy to explore Warsaw on foot. It’s a solid mid-range option if you want a reliable hotel in a great part of the city.
