But ok, let’s be honest for a second. When going on a trip, we usually don’t concern ourselves with the eco-friendly side of it. Planning itineraries, booking accommodation and transportation can be stressful enough. Plus, let’s say it out loud – sometimes we simply don’t care. And making any effort towards acquiring eco-friendly travel products seems like a big waste of time and money.
But what if I told you that buying this one particular thing takes less than 2 minutes. Or that this one particular thing can actually save you money while travelling. Or that by getting this one particular thing you save a lot of plastic without doing anything.
What is this mysterious and magical thing?
A reusable water filter bottle!
Using a reusable water filter bottle while traveling is not just eco-friendly, it’s also a smart move for several reasons:

How does the bottle work?
As I mentioned, the filter eliminates up to 99.9% of waterborne pathogens from any fresh water source. It has two stages of filtration:
- Hollow fibre in the filter acts like microscopic version of a sieve, trapping anything on its surface that is 0.1 microns and larger. It’s 99.9% effective against bacteria, protozoa and cysts (the average size of bacteria is 0.5 microns).
- The carbon fibre block in the filter purifies the water which improves the taste. It also reduces chlorine levels and removes heavy metals.
What does the bottle filter?
WaterWell bottle protects against bacteria, parasites, cysts, herbicides and pesticides and heavy metals. The filters also remove chlorine and microplastics that are 0.1 microns and above.
The filter in the bottle DOESN’T filter fluoride and viruses. If you’re concerned that there could be a viral risk where you’re going, you should (for example) boil water first and use WaterWell filter as an additional protection.
Can I filter any water?
You can filter from any moving fresh water source, like rivers, streams, waterfalls, taps. The filter CAN’T dissolve salts, so you CAN’T use it on sea water. It also doesn’t filter urine.
Can I add some isotonic powders or rehydration tablets to the water?
No! The filter will not be able to effectively remove any additives, so you can’t add them to your fresh water.
Will the water taste differently?
Short answer: no.
The water might indeed taste different during the first day, but if you follow the instructions regarding installing the filter, the aftertaste should disappear within few first uses.
How long can I use it for?
The filter has a lifespan of 1000 litres of water. If you drink, let’s say, the recommended 2 litres of water each day, the bottle should cover 500 days which is one year and 4 months. After that you should simply change the filter.
How does using the water bottle help the environment?
Well, I think it’s kind of obvious, but let’s dig into that.
When using the WaterWell bottle with filter you cut down on purchasing water in plastic bottles. And since one million plastic bottles are bought across the world every minute, you saving 2000 plastic bottles (this is the lifespan of one WaterWell filter) is quite a big contribution. Well, that naturally depends on where you live, where you travel and how much bottled water cost in those places. To make it easy, let’s say that on average a one litre bottle of water costs $1. With you drinking the recommended 2 litres of water per day, you’ll have to spend $730 (365 days x 2 litres a day) in a year. Well, with WaterWell water filter bottle you won’t have to do that! Ok, and last but not least…
Can I drink tap water in India or Indonesia?
Well, I did not make this bottle and I don’t want to take responsibility for your health and well-being, so I’ll just refer to my experiences and express my opinion.
I used WaterWell filter bottle in countries like, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan and many European countries and I never had any belly problems caused by water. So to answer this question with pure honesty: yes, I would drink tap water from the WaterWell bottle in Indonesia, but not in India.
Unfortunately, the topic of drinking tap water in India is very complicated, since you can never be sure of the water source – the water can come from pristine springs in the Himalayas or from the Ganges. The risk of viral infections in the water is also quite high. Even bottled water might not be safe to drink, it all depends on the region and the manufacturer.
But since this is not the topic of this blog post and I’ve never been to India, I’d leave the safety of drinking filtered tap water there to your judgement.
